Exclusive Q&A: Tiger Woods, A Lifelong Champion

Exclusive Q&A: Tiger Woods, A Lifelong Champion

Tiger Woods, now 44 years old, has had an unprecedented career since becoming a professional golfer in the late summer of 1996. He has won 107 tournaments, 82 of those on the PGA TOUR, including the 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2019 Masters Tournaments, 1999, 2000, 2006, and 2007 PGA Championships, 2000, 2002, and 2008 U.S. Open Championships, and 2000, 2005, and 2006 British Open Championships. With his second Masters victory in 2001, Tiger became the first ever to hold all four professional major championships at the same time.

From Tiger's numerous championship victories to his love of designing golf courses, we invite you to take a deeper look into the life of a champion.

Q. You have had an incredible season. How does it feel to be back on top?

TIGER: It feels great to be back. The reason I had my fourth back surgery was to try to lead a normal life, hopefully be pain-free and to be able to play with my kids. I thought maybe I could play golf with my friends, but I had no idea if I would be able to play the Tour again. At the beginning of the year, I didn't know how well I would play or how much. But, as the year progressed, my body, swing and equipment evolved and I was able to piece it all together. It was a great feeling to be able to go out there and compete and win again.

Q. Tell us what was going through your mind as you walked up the 18th hole of the Tour Championship?

TIGER: It was pretty incredible. I was staring straight ahead, but I was getting really emotional and had a hard time not crying walking up No. 18. I had the lead, but I told myself it's not over yet, and I better hit some good shots. Once I got the ball on the green, I knew I had it. In January, I didn’t know if this would ever happen again.

Q. Tell us about the design process — what is it like going from player to architect? What do you enjoy most about designing your own courses?

TIGER: I'm still competing, so I'm both playing and designing golf courses which is great. I didn't want to start designing golf courses until I had played around the world on all different styles of golf courses. I focus on creating memorable golf experiences that challenge the best golfers but are still fun and playable for higher handicap players. My courses have lots of options requiring players to make decisions and execute a variety of shots. To play well on a TGR Design course, you need to be creative and be willing to use the ground to get the ball close to the hole.

Q. Tell us about your vision for Trump World Golf Club, Dubai?

TIGER: We have created a unique experience with Trump World Golf Club, Dubai. I've always enjoyed the look and design elements of the Australian Sandbelt courses, and those characteristics are evident here. The course has a desert oasis feel, which utilizes the natural geography and complements it with lakes and beautifully landscaped areas. Like all of our projects, Trump World Golf Club, Dubai will test the better players while still being enjoyable to players of all abilities. Positioning off the tee, creative shot making, and using the ground as your friend will all be important to score well. We think this course is uniquely different from everything else in the region.

Q. What do you love most about Dubai?

TIGER: Year after year, Dubai continues to grow in importance in the world of golf. That’s not just for professionals, but amateurs too. It’s a vibrant city with lots of outstanding courses, great weather and wonderful people. Visitors always enjoy a trip to Dubai and the architecture and its many sights are beautiful and very impressive. It also serves as a global economic hub for many businesses.

Q. Tell us about working with DAMAC + Trump?

TIGER: We have been fortunate to be able to work with DAMAC Properties and the Trump Organization on this project. Both teams have high standards, a clear vision for success, and have supported TGR Design throughout the design and construction process. We look forward to the opening of the golf course and its operation by the Trump Organization. They have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to successfully manage unique, high-end courses and golf clubs, and this will be no exception.

Q. Philanthropy seems to be a big part of your life — tell us about your foundation, TGR and why you felt it was important to give back.

TIGER: The priorities my mom and pop taught me growing up were family, education and then golf. I've always remembered that. Our mission, empowering students to pursue their passions through education, reflects that. For over 20 years, my TGR Foundation has relied on education to change individuals' lives. We provide underserved students in need with the right resources for success in school, their communities and at work. We have assisted about 165,000 students in our TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim, California and satellite Learning Labs across the country. We also have about 200 Earl Woods Scholars attending college at many of the top universities in America. Today, we're reaching thousands of kids, but our goal is millions throughout the world. We're on the way with TGREDUexplore.org, our digital platform, which has reached more than 600,000 kids, as well as our educator professional development program for teachers around the world.
