Celebrating 19 Years of Exquisite Irish Links

Today marks the 19th anniversary of our exquisite links golf course at Trump International Doonbeg. In honor of this splendid occasion, we are taking a step back in time to explore the history behind the creation of our breathtaking oceanside golf experience. Long before the Lodge at Doonbeg and its accompanying golf course were established, the area around the village of Doonbeg was deemed a prime setting for links golf. In 1892, while looking for a stretch of land suitable for a links course, members of the British Army regiment, the Scottish Black Watch, seriously considered Doonbeg as a site for development. Clearly, this vision of the dunes as a supreme golfing haven was as potent in the nineteenth century as it would be today.

However, Doonbeg’s well-known association with golf would not come to be for another 110 years, as the military decided that infrastructure for local transportation was too sparse in the area and decided to shift their attention to the nearby coastal village of Lahinch. Yet in the early 1990s, a group of local community organizers, known as Doonbeg Community Development Company, dared to resurrect the possibility of bringing golf to the village. Discussions took place, meetings were held, and eventually, with the aid of Shannon Development, 377 acres of prime links land was purchased from four farming families around the dunes and bay of Doughmore. In conjunction with capital sourced from Kiawah Development Partners in the United States, work began on making Doonbeg Golf Course into a playable reality. In doing so, the newest of Ireland’s links courses attracted the attention of two-time British Open Champion and golf course designer Greg Norman. His first impression upon seeing the site was one of awe and surprise that such a site still existed for development: “... I was speechless. I didn’t know such a piece of property existed anymore. You could take a lawnmower and cut the fairways.”

In July of 2002, the course’s grand opening was marked by an exhibition match between Greg Norman and Irish Ryder Cup star Padraig Harrington. Upon opening it was immediately feted as ‘Best New International Golf Course’ by Golf Digest and since then has been a regular fixture in rankings such as The Top 100 Golf Courses in Ireland, the UK and the world.

With the opening of The Lodge at Doonbeg in 2006, the golf course was joined by a five-star hotel and spa, as well as two restaurants, Darby’s (now Trump’s Bar) and The Long Room (now The Oceanview Restaurant). Since its opening, The Lodge has received similar critical acclaim to its accompanying golf course, most recently being awarded in Condé Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards: Top 5 Resorts in Europe 2020.

In February 2014, The Trump Organization purchased the resort and renamed it Trump International Golf Links & Hotel, Doonbeg, while investing heavily in the facilities of the hotel and golf course. One of the first notable changes was the redesign of the golf course by world-renowned links course designer, Dr. Martin Hawtree. Spanning 1.5 miles of crescent-shaped beach and sand dunes, Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg is a stunning sight to behold with views of the Atlantic from 16 of 18 holes. The par-72 layout features a single loop of nine holes out and nine back, playing 7,026 yards from the back tees. In line with Norman’s philosophy of "least disturbance," the most natural route was taken in laying the course out through the sand dunes. As a result, the course has a unique combination of five par 3s and five par 5s. With variation in wind speed, the course plays differently almost every day, providing a truly unique playing experience at each hole. Through the work of Hawtree, Doonbeg’s course has become one of the must-play golf courses in the international circuit. We are incredibly proud of the pure golf experience provided by our award-winning Irish links course, and we invite you to enjoy this unique experience yourself.
